THE FIRE RECORD.

BURNED TO DEATH WHILE ASLEEP.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Dec. 16.—A dispatch from Newport, in this State, says that half the town is in flames; seven two-story brick buildings are destroyed, including the office of The News. The loss is estimated at $60,000 and is divided as follows:

Wolf & Goldman, $16,000, insured for $10,600;
Cowson & Saftin, $3,000, insurance $1,400;
W. H. Bogart, loss not given, insurance $7,000.

James Conner and Pleasant McNutt, of Independence County, and Mrs. Devona and another lady and child, name unknown, of Jackson County, who had been trading, were asleep in their rooms over Wolf & Goldman's, and burned to death. The charred remains were found this afternoon.
